Summer Meals Program

According to Feeding America, child hunger increases in the summer months when kids lack access to the meals they receive in school. The organization’s 2019 Map the Meal Gap report found that food insecurity exists in all counties where AppCAA operates. The food insecurity rate for children in Southwest Virginia is almost four percent higher than that of adults. Without early and consistent nutrition, children who live in poverty face higher risks for learning and developmental problems.

AppCAA helps combat this phenomenon by distributing food free of charge to children age 18 and under during the months of June and July.  In 2020, AppCAA provided more than 1,600 summer meals to children in Southwest Virginia who are at risk of hunger.
