Financial Programs

Throughout AppCAA’s work, we emphasize improving low-income individuals in Southwest Virginia’s economic status. To accomplish this, AppCAA has established robust and integrated interventions to help families reduce debt, improve credit, and save for life events.

AppCAA Financial Opportunities Center

AppCAA delivers group and individual workshops for adults to help them learn how to save money, reduce debt, improve their credit scores, avoid fraud and become financially independent. Each workshop lasts approximately one hour and can be attended in person or online. In addition to workshops, AppCAA offers one-on-one counseling for participants to help them develop budgets, understand types of financial services, and devise individual plans for improving their financial situations. This service is provided entirely FREE.

Housing Counseling Program (Including Pre-Purchase counseling with credit improvement assistance)

AppCAA’s Housing Counseling Program is designed to empower area residents by equipping them with the tools to improve their financial situation and maintain a stable living arrangement. Building on financial coaching, individuals work one-on-one with a HUD Certified Housing Counselor. Together, they will determine their best option — renting versus owning — and create a plan to work towards an individualized goal.

The program centers on:

  • Rental Counseling
  • Strengthening financial literacy
  • Fair housing laws
  • Preventing homelessness
  • Pre- and post-purchase financial management
  • Dangers of predatory lending and fraud prevention
  • Strategies to avoid mortgage delinquency

As part of AppCAA’s pre-purchase counseling and credit score improvement, we now offer funding to pay towards debt and collections to help improve credit score. This will enable participants to be better qualified for home purchasing. These services are provided entirely FREE.

First Time Homebuyers Loan Down payment assistance, savings match, and SPARC Program

AppCAA partners with Rural Development, by packaging 502 Direct Home Loans, and with Virginia Housing through an incentive program. This program is known as the Sponsoring Partnerships and Revitalizing Communities Program, or SPARC. The SPARC program lowers the interest rate on Virginia Housing’s first mortgage loans by one (1) percentage point from Virginia Housing’s first-time homebuyer rate.

AppCAA is also pleased to offer down payment assistance through the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). This program will provide a down payment up to 15% of the cost of the home for qualified buyers.

AppCAA is also offering the VIDA (Virginia Individual Development Account) Savings Match through DHCD. If a participant saves $1,000 toward the purchase of a home, a match of up to $10,000 can be earned towards the down payment. Both of these programs can be utilized together.
